This writeup is part of a series of debates where I was presenting the argument in favor of the motion that social media is a good form of education.

This house believes that social media is a good educator. Greetings Madam Chairperson, Members of the Jury and the house at large. Today, I will we talking about how we can find education everywhere, especially through Social Media.

Anywhere we go on the internet, we find videos, articles and websites all talking about the Current Affairs. You can find videos on politics, articles about the stock market and websites about climate change. We can find answers to any topic that we search on the internet in barely seconds . News is an important form of education as people can stay aware of what is happening in the world, whether it be a new law passed by the government, or just a short video on the environment. Twitter is a social media platform where many companies and people talk about the current affairs. This is the role of social media in News.

Secondly, I want to talk about the main subjects. In the current situation, there is little we are learning in school as half of the time we don’t focus and remote learning can get a bit boring sometimes. Yet despite this, many learners like me have started using websites like Khan Academy and Udemy for self-learning. Social Media platforms like YouTube and Facebook play a huge role in this as it is extremely easy to find information that we require.

A study shows that 72% of the population of 18–29 year olds like sports. Thus, sports education is seen and read by a lot of people. Social Media is the most common source of sports education with YouTube and Instagram having tens of thousands of channels that talk about sports and spread information throughout the community.

Finally, I want to talk about Inspirational Education. Famous people like Bill Gates and Malala Yousafzai have talked at conferences and meetings which have spread through social media like a wildfire, gaining millions of views in a few days! This education inspires us to innovate and to spread more awareness throughout the community. For example, a 17 year old speaker Greta Thunberg has taken over social media with her protests and talks to improve climate change.

And remember, as Dave Willis once said, “Don’t use Social Media to impress people, use it to impact people.” Thank you.
